Chinese New Year In Singapore

Friday, February 8, 2013
My family has never celebrated Chinese New Year, but that is about to change. It's hard not to get swept up in the excitement of the occasion while living in Singapore!

The shopping centers are decked out with beautiful decorations.

Ornate fans and flowers hang from the ceiling of the Paragon Shopping Center
on Singapore's famous Orchard Road.

Vendors and specialty markets have sprung up everywhere, selling freshly baked pineapple tarts, mandarin oranges and red & gold decor for the home.

The ground floor of Ngee Ann City shopping center, also on Orchard Road,
is transformed into a market of Chinese New Year decor and treats.

Hang these at your home for prosperity, a vendor at the market said.

And special events, including the carnival River Hongbao, are taking place across Singapore. My daughter's school even got in on the action, teaching the kids about Chinese New Year traditions and hosting a day of fun activities.

My daughter, wearing a Chinese New Year dress, is ready
to go to school and ring in the Year of the Snake with her friends.

My daughter brought to school mandarin oranges - a symbol of good fortune.

I think we're well placed to start celebrating this holiday from now on!

Is there a holiday your family adopted after living overseas?

Cheers,
Kristina

So cool, Kristina! I think Chinese New Year is pretty fun from everything I've seen. My friends that celebrate were so excited when Patrick was born last year for the year of the dragon. Looks like you will have a prosperous new year. And how cute is your little miss in her costume!! Love those pig tails!

As for here, we adopted celebrating the Hungarian St. Nikolas Day (he puts fruits & candies in children's shoes on Dec. 6).
