My Quest For The Perfect Stretch Mark Remedy

Wednesday, January 9, 2013
Tell me, friends. What fabulous concoction did you use to keep stretch marks at bay when you were pregnant? Did you use a secret family recipe? An exotic oil you discovered during your travels? Or just a little something you picked up from your local pharmacy?

I've slathered myself with a number of lotions and oils that can be found in most grocery or maternity stores. Some stretch-mark remedies worked for my skin, while others didn't. For example, I've tried cocoa butter lotion (which made me break out in rashes) and Cetaphil cream (which was perfect for sensitive skin like mine, but only kept the skin-stretching itchiness at bay during my tummy's smaller days - aka. during the first and second trimester).

As I entered my third trimester, I realized I needed to step up my quest for the perfect strech-mark remedy. After all, my baby is growing by leaps and bounds and so is my belly. In an effort to find some heavy-duty hydration for my sensitive skin, I visited various shops in Singapore. However, I couldn't find anything effective, yet affordable. Then, I remembered my neighbor Amanda mentioned a few months ago that her and her mom used olive oil during their pregnancies - a simple family staple that worked to keep those ugly lines from popping up on their skin.

I was skeptical to use something I normally reserve for cooking on my belly. But I decided to give it a try and boy am I glad I did! While I do feel like a butter ball turkey sometimes while basting myself with olive oil, the skin on my belly is currently in a state of moisturized heaven. Thanks, Amanda!

Cheers,
Kristina
P.S. I certainly hope you weren't expecting a picture of my bare belly! A bottle of olive oil will have to do! :)

Household mystery solved: that's where the olive oil went.

I used coconut oil and must say I do not have a single stretch mark. Depending on your ambient temperature, the "oil" can actually be a solid in the jar. But when you scoop it out it quickly melts into your fingers/over your belly. Not only is it 100% natural and edible, it smells like the beach.

I read online that stretch marks are mostly hereditary. Since my mom had stretch marks, I figured that I was doomed to have them too and didn't try to stop them. The only think I rubbed on them was psoriasis medicine, as my psoriasis would develop on top of the marks. She said that they faded after a year and mine had begun to fade too, until I started growing again from the new pregnancy. I complained about the stretch marks the other day and my husband said, "I haven't noticed any stretch marks." Good man.

Definitely need to remember this for when I'm pregnant! Just found your cute blog through the blog hop. I'm a new follower. Hope you'll stop by sometime!

Both our babies were born in Italy and we found that olive oil is also AWESOME for the meconium diapers! Just lather it on baby's bum and it makes those first diaper changes easy! Nicole

Olive oil has a variety of uses, and is usually free of any allergens. In Morocco, argan oil is what women use, although olive oil is readily available there too. Argan oil can be expensive, but leaves skin just as silky smooth as olive oil.
