The Pumpkin Hunt

Wednesday, October 31, 2012
There are no pumpkin patches that I am aware of in Singapore. As Halloween quickly approached, I had to figure out how to create a fun way for my daughter to find a pumpkin to carve -- as per our family tradition -- without the benefit of having fields of pumpkins, hay rides and games at my disposal.

One day while out grocery shopping at Cold Storage, a local grocery store, I found a small selection of pumpkins. Next to them, I spotted these lovelies:

Once I saw the package of six plastic pumpkins, I was immediately inspired to create a scavenger hunt for my daughter Bella. The pumpkins had openings just large enough to hold clues that would lead her to various things she needed to carve a pumpkin, decorate for Halloween and have the energy to do it all (Ahem, that's code for candy!). The final clue, of course, would lead her to the pumpkin.

The clues had her giggling, skipping and running all over the inside and outside of our house. In the end, she discovered the pumpkin had been hiding in her princess tent all along. Sneaky, mommy! :)

Once the pumpkin hunt was over, my husband and Bella got to work carving the pumpkin. And our hearts warmed when our daughter -- covered in pumpkin goo -- declared, "This is fun!"

Have you ever celebrated Halloween overseas? Ever try to buy a pumpkin in a foreign country? What was your experience like?

Cheers,
Kristina
