Moving Mondays: Unpacking Lessons
Monday, September 3, 2012
My Traveling Troop's household goods arrived in Singapore last week and, as predicted, we acted like kids on Christmas morning as we opened each box. Packing paper was strewn everywhere in an effort to discover what was in each package. Furniture that we were once tired of got pats and big smiles from us. We even discovered a couple of things that we forgot we had!
That said, not everything about the unpacking process went smoothly. There were a few bumps in the road and lessons I learned along the way.
Lesson #1. Wear bug spray! The next time I move to a tropical locale where mosquitos dwell, I will definitely cover myself in bug spray. The movers had to leave the front door open most of the day. As a result, I got at least a half dozen mosquito bites! Ouch!
Lesson #2. Be careful what you wish for! For years, we had a coffee table made of a metal base and glass top. I never really liked the coffee table and every once in awhile I would ask my husband if we could rid of it -- to no avail. But once my husband set up the coffee table's metal base in our new home I told him, "Wow, that actually looks good here. I think I'm finally beginning to like it!" So, off he went to ask the movers where the glass top for the coffee table was. Their answer: the glass top is in a box shattered. Perhaps if I liked the darn coffee table before, it would have had the strength to survive the overseas move intact!
Lesson #3. Unpack the toys ASAP! My three-year old was a good sport on moving day once I unpacked her toys. She sat in her room happily playing for the rest of the day, saving her and me from having a few tantrums. :)
Did you recently move? What lessons did you learn?
Cheers,
Kristina

Merry Christmas! :) We are scheduled to receive our HHG next week. We've have only been without ours for a month though so it isn't too bad at all. It probably won't feel like Christmas but rather like a little surprise gift on a Monday.
