Moving Mondays: Missing Monterey

Monday, July 30, 2012
Although My Traveling Troop is grateful for the opportunity to live in Singapore, there are some things from our previous home in Monterey, Calif., that we miss. Here are a few of them:

1. The beaches and ocean view. We were able to gaze at the deep-blue water on a daily basis while we walked, jogged, bicycled, sailed, hiked and dined in Monterey. What a treat! Our favorite way to enjoy the view, however, was from the balcony of our home or while getting cozy by a bonfire at the beach.

2. Dennis the Menace Playground. My daughter loved running around the playground, which features several play structures, a suspension bridge, maze, rock-climbing wall and steam engine. The playground was also the site of her ballet and gymnastics classes. Once playtime was over, we usually treated ourself to a snow cone from the snack stand or a picnic by the nearby lake.

3. The restaurants. My husband and I miss such dining establishments as 1833, Fandango and Roy's, which offered amazing food, service and atmosphere -- the ingredients for a perfect date night. For a casual-family lunch, our place of choice was Akaoni. The small Japanese restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea will always stand out in our minds for serving fresh, high grade fish. My husband adored the chirashi, which is a bowl of rice topped with a variety of sashimi. My daughter and I usually split a meal of sushi, miso soup, salad and chicken katsu. We're drooling just thinking about it.

I think it's natural to look back and reminisce about the time spent in one city as we try to get settled in another. Don't you?

Did you just move? What are some things you miss from your old home?

Cheers,
Kristina
